Why is the Gym Culture Growing so Fast Nowadays?

You only exist because your ancestors were the right combination of badass and horny.

Many years ago, fitness was a necessity and a natural byproduct of life. You had to be fit to survive. The weak died off. The strong, capable and able survived. That is the way of nature.

And so, generally speaking, we were fit. Hard living made for hard people. There wasn’t a fitness culture, there was a fitness lifestyle. People didn’t even think about it. They just adapted. It wasn’t always pretty, and I’m sure they didn’t enjoy it, but it was effective.

Getting fat was a luxury. It was difficult to do. Only the rich could afford such sloth coupled with large amounts of food. So, actually, it was attractive. It represented a high ability to gather a valuable resource-food, unarguably essential-with little effort.

It represented survive-ability.

Fast forward a few millennia to today, and the whole world has been turned upside down. It’s never been easier to get fat than today.

We don’t have to go hunt outside. We hunt down emails in our inbox and peck out responses on a board of keys.

We don’t go without food for long periods of time. We have food at the snap of our fingertips, twenty four hours a day. In many places, you don’t even need to go out to buy groceries anymore.

We eat more, and move less.

Internet users grow by 1 million people per day.

There are more smartphones than people on the planet.

And thus, fit is the new fat, and fat is the new fit.

Fitness is a luxury.

The credit goes to media and lifestyle.

The fitness industry didn’t exist few decades ago and was barely making a contribution to the global economy.

With the rise of digital information and access to media we’re seeing a proliferation of gym centers, nutritional products, and wellness centers everywhere.

Today, the health and fitness industry is over 100 billion dollars.

Let’s see this:

  1. In movies, we see actor and actress flaunting their muscles, abs and stamina.
  2. We see models doing ramp walk with great physiques.
  3. In real life, we see someone suffering from health related issues and they are trying to get back to life with good diet and exercise.
  4. Every newspaper or magazine focuses on smart looking models who are fit and charming.
  5. We idolize actors and aim to become like them or look like them.
  6. You are being perceived as capable if you’re fit in corporate and personal life.
  7. New year resolution is another trend that is fueling the growth of fitness culture. Millions of people plan to have new year resolutions as joining the gym and reducing the extra weight in 2–3 months time.
  8. The disposable income is increasing and the middle-class families are growing at a rapid rate.
  9. After working for years in corporate life, with sedentary lifestyle the employee gains weight and is looking for ways to reduce the excess weight.
  10. The average cost of nutritious food product is 2x higher than the junk food, so we keep on consuming the junk food until we realize our health is at stake and we make a decision to join gym.
